Safe Fire Extinguisher Disposal in Singapore
Expired, damaged, or discharged fire extinguishers cannot simply be thrown into domestic rubbish chutes, general trash bins, or standard blue recycling bins. Because fire extinguishers are pressurized vessels containing chemical extinguishing agents, improper disposal presents serious safety hazards, including violent cylinder ruptures inside waste compactors and chemical contamination.
Under Singapore Standard SS 578:2019, condemned or life-expired cylinders must be safely depressurized, stripped of chemical agents, and permanently decommissioned to prevent unauthorized refilling.
Fire Guard provides disposal and decommissioning services for commercial buildings, industrial premises, MCSTs, and homeowners across Singapore.
Why You Cannot Throw Fire Extinguishers into General Trash
Explosion Hazard in Waste Compactors: Stored-pressure extinguishers and high-pressure CO2 cylinders can rupture violently when crushed inside waste collection trucks or refuse incineration plants.
Chemical Handling & Soil Protection: Extinguishing agents such as dry powder (monoammonium phosphate), fluorinated foams, and alkaline wet chemicals must be contained and handled responsibly to prevent environmental runoff into municipal drainage.
Scrap Metal Recycling Protocol: Metal recyclers strictly reject pressurized cylinders. Cylinders must be safely degassed, have their valves removed, and be physically rendered unusable before scrap processing.
