A ship is fitted with various types of fire retardant and firefighting equipment to fight any kind of fire and extinguish it as soon as possible. The types of fire extinguishers used onboard ships depend on the type of fire and the fuel source.

Types of Marine Fire Extinguishers

  • Dry Chemical Powder Fire Extinguishers (Class A & B)

Sodium bicarbonate powder is the active ingredient and used to extinguish many types of fires. It is mainly located in the engine room and near electrical equipment.

  • CO2 Fire Extinguishers (Class B)

They are usually located near flammable liquids.

  • Foam Fire Extinguishers (Class A & B)

Mostly suitable for use on Class A solid combustible fires and Class B flammable liquid fires. Foam fire extinguishers work by creating a blanket effect. This prevents oxygen from reaching the combustible material or flammable liquid vapour, thereby smothering the fuel source and preventing reignition.

Steps to Take for Putting Away a Fire

The first thing you should do in order to limit the action of a fire is to make sure that people around are informed of the accident. The fewer people are in the affected area, the fewer the accidents and injuries that may result. The following briefly illustrates the steps of using a fire extinguisher:

  • Pull the Pin (usually top of the extinguishers)
  • Aim the base of the fire
  • Squeeze the lever slowly (release the extinguishing agent)
  • Sweep from side to side (from a safe distance)
